Bruce made a good comment the MPG cars. A lot of people may know that but probably not the KWH a house needs. I would go even further. We have a Water Initiative here at Penn State. I would include water usage as well in the discussion since the generation of clean freshwater energy-intensive.
The answer to my question: Average kWh is 30 for a house per day in US. About the same energy as a gallon of gas.

Kevin, great point about information sharing, since as technology costs fall, the transaction costs become a major barrier and standardizing/reducing the structuring of transactions is the next great way to bring down costs.
