39:01
Hi, everyone!

40:38
I hope to soak up as much collective wisdom as I can today! I need to leave a little early for a 9:50 a.m. Pacific meeting. It won't be because I've lost interest.

46:23
my boss says the signers are not visible at the top. just FYI

47:15
i see us in the gallery view with the window expanded

47:33
ok good :)

47:47
I was unable to right click to pin the ASL interpreters. Did it work for anyone else? Currently, I can see the presentation slides and the active speaker only.

48:02
Will all the Power Points in the webinar be available later?

48:02
Hmmm… OK. Working on it!

48:02
Didn’t work for me, either.

48:49
How about now? Can you see Katie?

51:23
I just pinned Valoree. Hopefully you can see her!

51:30
Can you see both speakers and both interpreters in a gallery view setting?

52:20
Ok. Still working on it!

52:29
:(

52:33
No, at least I cannot.

52:38
No, I can’t see that - only the PPT and speaker.

52:45
I could see both in the gallery view before the presentations started. There aren't any options to toggle for moving back to that view.

53:04
If people are in full screen mode, hovering over the speaker may give you the option to change the view.

53:07
Right…no options to get to gallery now. Could see gallery before.

53:18
I tried that. Didn’t work.

53:23
Am on MacBook Air.

53:24
I see the slides and the speaker who is speaking.

53:31
No right clicking on anything is possible.

53:40
Same as Ann and Sheila

54:19
I can double click on speaker, which makes that big and PPT small. And vice versa. But no other options.

54:54
Hello, panelists. We think that participants who need interpreters may not be able to see them.

55:49
Holly - can we turn off everyone else but the interpreter to make sure we are being seen? I can text when we are about to switch to make sure the screens are ready to catch the next interpreter

56:09
Yes. Working on that now!

56:16
Thank you!

56:45
Ok, I tried another thing. Let me know if you all can see valor!

56:51
valoree

56:59
Dan’s photo disappeared, but can’t see anyone else.

57:09
that worked!!

57:20
Ah!!!! Valoree’s picture is there!!!

57:34
highlight

57:45
I see Valoree now. Thank you!

57:49
Interpreters will switch close to the 15 minutes mark - 12pm, 12:15, etc. we will comment here when we are about to do so. Then just wait for the current interpreter’s hands to go down. Thanks for the flexibility!!

58:16
ok. Perfect! Will do!

59:08
Sandra Leavitt - all of the tutoring advice we create is archived in a database. Tutors can look up a student before a session to review their previous experiences.

01:00:22
I’ll ask all the presenters if they are willing to share all their materials and we can put it on the website!

01:01:20
Yes, I’m interested in your template!

01:01:37
I’m interested in the template! Thanks!

01:09:53
These multimodal practices are very practical, thank you!

01:10:51
Thank you! That WLN publication also has more detail about how we train tutors to work online.

01:12:07
Does someone have a link to a video that tutors might watch to see synchronous tutoring in process? Especially given that my staffers are undergrads at a SLAC, in which the “face to face” is the coin of the realm.

01:12:27
(Synchronous online tutoring, that is…)

01:14:09
@Scott, Jenelle put great materials on the website for this presentation, including this synchronous session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksltTbvLr34

01:14:48
THANK YOU Leigh! I missed that!

01:15:38
Everyone requesting the template can find it here, along with a great deal more detail about our training process: https://wlnjournal.org/digitaleditedcollection1/index.html

01:16:02
Np, but all thanks go to Jenelle!

01:18:10
I know Jenelle is posting materials on the website - How can we access a sample text-chat consultation?

01:18:16
Here is my website again: https://jmdembsey.com/

01:18:16
Thank you, Jennelle!

01:18:26
I have sample text-chat consultation on my website that you can use :)

01:18:30
thank you all so much!

01:18:32
Thank you for your generosity in sharing these materials, Jenelle!

01:18:54
I also have a recorded video consultation that I recorded with my colleague luke shackelford. you are welcome to use and share that video as well

01:19:25
Thanks so much.

01:19:29
Thanks, Jenelle!

01:19:39
Janelle, your presentation and materials are wonderful. Thank you for your generosity.

01:20:01
i hope they are helpful for other contexts!

01:20:27
Thank you so much, Jenelle! This was all very helpful

01:20:37
@Jenelle, I will use them with the students in my synchronous advanced writing course. The first week, we'll do online training and practice using our platform.

01:20:39
Thank you

01:22:01
thanks Shannin! modeling is always helpful for teaching about accessibility practices :)

01:22:14
Thank you, Janelle.

01:22:16
great news, Lucie! and you know where to find me, friend :)

01:22:31
I see people raising hands. I will be able to get to those during the Q&A!

01:22:51
for any follow up, you're welcome to contact me via jmdembsey@gmail.com

01:23:23
Great questions, Suzanne. Can you post that in the Q&A section so it doesn’t get lost!

01:25:52
For some folx it might make sense to reach out to the library as well since many of them are using online tools to support text-based chat and SMS and you might be able to get access to their platform cheaply or for free.

01:26:29
Absolutely!

01:27:01
Our library uses Springshare Suites and they let the Academic Success Center and IRB share this platform to be available via chat and to record data about emails and chat messages

01:27:27
My library is adding a chat line for us—I think they also use Springshare. The extra line was just $99/year.

01:27:37
yes, its a reasonable price

01:27:51
We use the same LMS the students will be using for their coursework, so there is no additional cost to the centre and the students are familiar with the environment.

01:28:34
The Springshare LibAnswers chat platform allows for Zoom integration, which is helpful to do screen sharing during a consult.

01:28:45
@Nico--that's what my WC will be doing. We have a location/course in our LMS where we'll offer our AOT and where we'll go to schedule the synchronous sessions.

01:29:33
We even use the assignment submission system in Blackboard for the asynchronous tutoring

01:29:41
Slack has been really useful for us!

01:30:02
@Nico--that's what we've been doing & it makes providing feedback and posting feedback really simple!

01:30:21
Yes!

01:32:01
Yes…I did have to come up with a policy that restricts usage of Slack to professional conversations only (particularly direct messages).

01:33:29
We, too, use WC Online and Zoom. You mentioned integrating the two. How can we do that?

01:34:10
@Marie Soriano Young -- can you say more? Why constrain how they use DM. Is it about the limits Slack imposes for free accounts?

01:34:46
I really like Screecast-O-Matic. It's really intuitive and, if you purchase a yearly subscription (less than $20), you can actually edit anything you record--and that editing tech is easy to use, too!

01:35:00
@Tuli we have included links to tutors Zoom rooms in their bios in the appointment form on WCOnline

01:35:13
Please post any questions in the Q&A so that they don’t get lost here!

01:35:27
Will switch right after this summary.

01:36:09
WELL DONE Y’ALL!!!!

01:36:25
@Phyllis, I’d be glad to talk more offline. In short, one consultant was using direct messages inappropriately to try to contact consultants of the opposite gender.

01:36:29
Thank you!

01:36:38
Thank you! :)

01:36:38
so much great information! thanks

01:36:43
Thank you so much to all presenters. This was *excellent*!

01:36:50
This was AMAZING! Thank you everyone

01:36:53
We have also been using Screencast-o-matic. the professional version has a close caption tool which is useful

01:37:02
Thank you, all presenters!!!

01:37:09
Thank you to all the presenters & interpreters. And thanks to IWCA for sponsoring!

01:37:20
Screencast-o-matic is also a great tool!

01:37:45
Thanks for all the great information.

01:37:47
Thank you so much! Great presentations.

01:38:12
Thanks a lot. It was great!

01:39:01
It’d be great if you could switch back to Gallery view for the Q&A so we can see everyone as they answer questions!

01:39:58
I think I did on my screen Hannah. Let me see if it works on your screen

01:40:07
I have the interpreter highlighted though.

01:40:23
I only see Interpreter Katie right now.

01:40:33
We might need to turn on our videos for them to see the rest of us

01:42:06
Yes and I’m afraid it will kick Katie out! But we can try!

01:42:30
We have "stock phrase" documents for asynchronous tutors, and encourage the tutors to personalize this material.

01:44:09
@Nancy Squair - did you create your own “stock phrase” documents?

01:45:18
I know several people asked about WCOnline/Zoom Integration, WCOnline does have that capability, but at ODU, that is not what we used. Rather, at our institution, we have individual static zoom links for all faculty and students, so tutors kept their links handy and just shared this once the WConline appointment began in case we ran into any issues.

01:45:47
Please find the template, and more detail about our training process online, here: https://wlnjournal.org/digitaleditedcollection1/index.html

01:46:32
@Sheryl Cavales Doolan: we built these stock phrase documents up over time from common tutor responses to typical assignments--e.g. thesis problems, organization/structure problems, etc.

01:47:06
Thanks, Nancy!

01:47:18
A majority of students in our institution come from outside the u.S. mainly SE Asia and Northeast Africa. So their facility with different platforms can vary widely. Do you have some solutions or best practices for that?

01:48:08
Panelists, we cannot see you. Please identify yourself when answering. Thanks.

01:49:15
@Nancy Squair: Could you share your stock phrase document with me, please? ghosht@ctsnet.edu. TIA

01:50:46
@Tuli Ghosh--I will check with our coordinator about sharing that document and send it on if I get permission.

01:52:14
@Nancy Squair: I’d like the stock phrase documents, too, if you are able to share. Thanks! anowak@tourolaw.edu

01:52:30
Walk-in Tutoring: I run a smaller tutoring center for the English dept and we always did "walk in tutoring" - so when we went to Zoom we also did "walk in" on zoom (and used a waiting room feature) and generally it worked out - I guess we're not a big operation so we didn't have multiple students walking into the zoom sessions - so our tutors are paid for the hours they're scheduled for the walk-in hours. (We have a separate Learning Assistance Center that handles campus wide tutoring and they use a scheduled tutoring sessions and tutors are paid for the hours they tutor)

01:53:18
You can create "public site" in Canvas and design it as a webpage

01:53:45
If all panelists could consistently announce who is speaking when they take a turn, that can really help the interpreters to visual indicate a change in voice/speaker. (This is more important now that panelists aren’t on the screen so there aren’t other visual indicators.) Sorry we don’t have your voices memorized yet!! :)

01:53:50
@Nancy Squair: If you can share, I’d appreciate the stock phrase docs too please! TIA!scavalesdoolan@santarosa.edu

01:55:29
For those using Slack, what role does email serve?

01:56:56
Email for my staff is just involved when students are assigned a consultant, so the student can share the Google Doc with the consultant.

01:58:49
@ Maria S. so you have a more formal usage of Slack, meaning you can discuss time off requests and schedule changes

01:59:02
@Joseph -- As a tool for tutor communication? We use Slack for the tutors talking to each other more informally. They don't really communicate with each other via email. If I have something important, I will send an email out to all of them. Does that help?

01:59:25
I love the idea of having space for tutors to debrief after an appointment. Having that space is very important for reflective pedagogy. Making that online has been tricky for us.

01:59:43
@Nancy Squair Stock phrases: custerk@wcsu.edu

02:00:00
@ megan— it does.we are doing something simil

02:00:09
similar

02:00:49
I think we need to create a “guide” for tutors, because the conversations have been getting confused.

02:01:01
Thank you so much for a fantastic session. Have to go to another meeting.

02:01:09
thank you all

02:01:10
@Joseph — yes. We have channels for all-staff info, like reminders and announcements, as well as shift cancellations. I did some fun “photo shares” when we went to all-online work. I use direct messages for sharing information about appointments.

02:01:27
Thank you. This was great!

02:01:31
@Gabe, we use a breakout room in Zoom for tutors to use as a virtual hangout space/work room if they are waiting for sessions.

02:02:28
what a great workshop! thanks to all!

02:02:29
@Maria— That might be a good move for us

02:02:53
@Joseph—feel free to email me if you ever want to talk more about Slack stuff! msoriano@jcu.edu.

02:02:56
Thanks to all the panelists for sharing their ideas and expert opinions on the available tools and resources for online tutoring.

02:02:57
Thank you--I hope you can put together the marketing webinar and/or materials. This is my biggest problem at the moment. Our appointments dropped off significantly when we had to move online!

02:03:04
I have another meeting at 1. Thank you all for this presentation!

02:03:32
Thank you all for an excellent session. Very interested in the marketing webinar too. Great idea!

02:03:35
@Maria, in spring we were trying to do that, but it didn’t work for a lot of folx. One of our staff told us they were just too burned out to engage online. But maybe fall will work out!

02:03:50
Thank you Maria, I will.

02:03:51
Thank you so much. This was an excellent and information session!

02:04:08
@Gabe, totally understandable. I have some consultants staying at home this semester, so maybe I will just start a “for fun” channel!

02:04:17
Thank you again for all of the valuable information. It is much appreciated!

02:04:20
Thank you very much for this interest Webinar!!! :)

02:04:21
@ Nancy Squair - stock phrases: kpavlock@emich.edu Thank you!

02:04:24
Thanks a lot! It has been amazing to know and learn from your expertise. I hope I can apply it soon in our context! Be Well!

02:04:32
mboeshar@odu.edu -- if anyone has questions.

02:04:41
I've seen lots of requests for info about integrating WCOnline and Zoom. I will create a document outline how I have tried to manage the integration and share that with webinar materials

02:04:47
Thanks to all the panelists and participants! Great presentations and helpful Q&A session too

02:04:55
Thank you for the great presentations and Q&A!

02:05:10
*Interesting :)

02:05:17
Thanks for that question about emotional labor. It's an important factor. :)

02:05:21
Looking forward to accessing the presentation materials later.

02:05:28
Thank you, everyone!!

02:05:30
Excellent session and presentations. Thank you.

02:05:33
Thank you!!!!!

02:05:35
Thanks, all! :)

02:05:39
Thank you all!

02:05:44
Thank you so much!

02:05:46
Thanks, everyone!

02:05:48
Thanks Holly! I think this was a well-organized conference/workshop. Great job!

02:05:58
Wonderful presentations! Thank you!

02:06:00
Thanks everyone!

02:06:06
Excellent! Thank you so much everyone!

02:06:06
I appreciate having this kind of session. I’d be happy to join more to learn about how these things are working out for others.

02:06:07
Thank you! This was very helpful!

02:06:09
This was organized very well— thanks!!

02:06:15
Thank you! Great info

02:06:26
Thanks, everyone

02:06:35
Thank you! This was very informative.

02:06:52
Bye, thanks!
