Thanks Matt! Just redirected class traffic to this room. I got your email late because I was on childcare duty this morning (ha)

[In general, students don't talk to me enough about what they want to do and can I connect them with someone]

That's how one of my student research assistants found her summer internship after other leads fell through; though her friend's dad
Robert Magneson Chiles
01:11:03
I've also had a student reach out to me, and then I've connected them with Alicia - and then she helped him get an internship with her org (Population Reference Bureau) :D

01:16:36
If someone reaches out to me who I've never talked to before or heard of, and they say, "[My friend/colleague] suggested that I contact you, Rob" - it's pretty much *impossible* for me not o write them back and do everything I can to help them. Wouldn't you do the same? Referrals *work*

I really appreciate Matt's point about preparation before networking. I did a lot of networking the summer after I graduated without knowing who I was or what I really wanted. It was still helpful, and the networking gave me some clarity, but the people who I talked to weren't always sure how they could help me because I didn't know (!)

And people will remember those stories that you tell them about yourselves. Storytelling is powerful - we'll talk about that next week.
Robert Magneson Chiles
01:24:03
Especially if you remind them about yourselves.
Robert Magneson Chiles
01:24:58
I mean - especially if you remind them about themselves, if they see a part of themselves in you, that will build a strong connection
Robert Magneson Chiles
01:26:04
Matt, can you say a little bit about professional background and context for video interviews?
Robert Magneson Chiles
01:26:24
I mean visual background in the room.
Robert Magneson Chiles
01:27:49

Matt, let's say that someone is running into a lot of dead-ends with their search. What can they do to be proactive and keep hustling, staying busy, and developing their skills?
