Thanks Maggie and Melisaa. Great topics!

01:06:02
What do you mean by "Integrative Studies is not a check requirement'?
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:06:18
yes you are very clear and loud Mellisa
Maggie Slattery
01:06:53
A check requirement is just a “check” that a US/IL” course has been taken and it doesn’t matter what other categories it counts toward.
Debbie Lissenden
01:07:24
more questions on that later … or maybe you will address?
Maggie Slattery
01:07:35
As compared to a course counting toward GenEd that can’t count toward other sections of the audits. i will prompt Melissa to address during the presentaiton.
Chuck Brown
01:07:38
What semester specifically is "2185"
RUNGUN R NATHAN

Debbie Lissenden
01:10:23
In the Gen Ed section, does a specific category still collapse even if it's not really met, i.e. neither course slotting is a 'pure' gen ed?
Linda
01:10:41
@Chuck Brown: 2018, semester starts in 5th month? Summer 2018?
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:10:48
yes and thanks
Maggie Slattery
01:11:32
@Debbir :ossenden The audit verifies that a single domain is included UNLESS an exception has been used that wipes out all the controls on a requirement.

RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:14:13
If minimum is 24, how can 30 be required - confusing
Debbie Lissenden
01:14:22
I was asking the same question as Linda :)
Harriett Gaston
01:14:38
Is the GHW courses also included in the 30 credits of general education?
Maggie Slattery
01:15:02
A GA/GH and a GH/GN will not collapse GH.
Dennis Shea
01:15:03
My concern is that the major firewall issue as coded is not what was intended. Certain colleges (e.g., HHD) does NOT want that firewall on major courses that disciplinary colleges wanted. Would love to see that addressed
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:15:08
Is GQ requirement of C applicable to Associate degrees in business
Naomi
01:15:10
what are the minimum requirements for GQ? specific classes or individualized for majors?
Maggie Slattery
01:15:38
Dennis that is a topic that must be taken up by Senate.
Maggie Slattery
01:15:51
GQ courses are listed on the bulletin on the GQ course list.
Maggie Slattery
01:16:11
Yes GHW is part of the 30 credits.
Linda
01:16:58
Debbie, I think there's a programming error but I'm not sure it's being acknowledged yet. We've seen the category filled with two "N" courses; maybe it's been recently fixed?
Dennis Shea
01:17:03
Maggie, my understanding is different. Senate approved this for disciplinary colleges, not all colleges, but the constraints of LP prevented it from being coded at the college level. It's not a Senate issue, it's an LP issue
Maggie Slattery
01:17:05
The specific requirements for Knowledge domains can be completed with 24 credits but 30 credits is a requirement too.
w87K4NWzVI8BxWACnwIBaQ==
01:17:37
Since linked courses are just one gen ed, can a GHW-linked course cover the 3cr GHW requirement?
omw5022

Some inter-domain courses include GHW, but you can't have 3 credits of GHW as an inter-domain course. Why is that?
RUNGUN R NATHAN

Maggie Slattery
01:18:31

I think the coding of 'ranges' on the audits makes it very easy to miss something as an adviser and in graduation checks.
Maggie Slattery
01:20:00
Some inter-domain courses include GHW, but you can't have 3 credits of GHW as an inter-domain course. Why is that? They can be used via the MOVE 3 - what was previously known as 3-6-9
Debbie Lissenden
01:21:26
Maggie - I don't understand your last comment about using interdomain GHW via move 3 ???
RUNGUN R NATHAN

01:23:31
Maggie - I don't understand your last comment about using interdomain GHW via move 3 ??? If a Inter-domain GHW is taken, the GHW credits could be counted in another domain using the Move 3. We can discuss more offline.

Debbie Lissenden
01:28:47
Is there any hope that the University will take a look at this whole thing again so we can have a gen ed system that allows for an accurate degree audit at all times?
Dr. Root
01:29:21
Agree- accurate degree audit at all times is ESSENTIAL
Harriett Gaston
01:29:25
For students who are using the "What If' degree audit rather than the "Academic Requirements" degree audit, will these new areas be showing in the "What if" degree?
Linda
01:31:15
Rungun Nathan, thank you for sharing that tool. I had not seen it before.
PSU

qRJi7XY6/jAKp9eMvGCFeg==
01:32:01
We have students whose "What-if-report" have shown all their courses used, but when we look at the degree audit it has courses that are in Courses not used.
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:32:24
Honestly why are we making understanding Gen Ed like getting a degree?
Josh Parcha
01:33:47

01:36:31

01:36:55
Is it possible to have transfer students with courses that can be assigned to integrated domains??
Ajaya Sankara Warrier
01:36:58
Is it possible to give a pie chart of the whole GN requirements
Maggie Slattery
01:37:11
Can the 6 additional knowledge domain flexibility credits be fulfilled by Interdomain or Linked courses? - YES
Ajaya Sankara Warrier
01:37:39
I mean Gen Ed including GN GA GH GS and GHW
janet knott
01:38:41
Hope this is not going to be more costly to students who are not able to understand the academic requirements.
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:38:50
I really think we have to develop a tool that can be used by advisors. The planning tool (https://genedplan.psu.edu) needs a student login.
w87K4NWzVI8BxWACnwIBaQ==
01:39:03
but arent't the 6 additional flexibility credits really electives?
Robin Stokes
01:39:13
where is the "exclude" feature?
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:39:16
Janet Knott - I have a feeling this will happen, it may also delay some graduation.
Maggie Slattery
01:39:24
but arent't the 6 additional flexibility credits really electives? - yes genes electives
Maggie Slattery
01:39:51
the exclude feature is something that can be done by someone with exception access
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:40:52
For most engineers MATH 140 alternate you suggest will not be valid - because they have to take MATH 140, 141, 230, 251 and 220
Courtney Wozetek
01:41:01
So a C is NOT required for all 6 credits of the GQ?
Chuck Brown
01:41:14
Math 110 or 140 do not always allow a "D" in major. Just need to be careful by major.
mcn5203
01:41:16
The gen ed plan tool does not require a student login. you can use this at any time, you need to be logged in through webaccess
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:41:32
Courtney - my understanding is the 2 GQ courses with C or better is required
Sarah
01:41:40
how does a waiver work if a the C or better in a course is a future enforced prerequisite?
IST Advising
01:41:47
If a student takes ASTRO 7N, counts as GA and GN, then aslo takes COMM 150N, but only wants to count it as a GA, is this allowed? To satisfy 6 credit GA
Maggie Slattery
01:41:58
So a C is NOT required for all 6 credits of the GQ? - No! six credits of GQ just not neccessarily GQs that are prescribed.
Maggie Slattery
01:42:23
The GQ situation does not really apply to engineering students since they have such a large math requirement.
Maggie Slattery
01:42:34
If a student takes ASTRO 7N, counts as GA and GN, then aslo takes COMM 150N, but only wants to count it as a GA, is this allowed? To satisfy 6 credit GA - NO
Maggie Slattery
01:43:01
COMM 150N is not a single domain course and doesn’t meet the intention of the requiremetn.
UGE
01:43:25

Courtney Wozetek
01:43:34
I'm not in Engineering, I'm in HHD. My students have to take STAT 200 but it's not C or higher, the other GQ are not prescribed. So a D in both STAT 200 and say MATH 21 would fulfill the req through an exception?
RUNGUN R NATHAN
01:44:37
Can we really create a flowchart to use when I have a student that is admitted and is sitting in my office for help with Gen Ed according to the new GenEd Plans
nma2
01:44:49
IST Advising, I do not think that would work... COMM150 becoing integrative is a pain becasue so many campuses used it for a GA. I think someone needs to author a GA IL Film course that is not integrative.

01:45:36

In the What if report, it doesn't pull the course subs done in an audit- so, shouldn't we refer students to run the academic requirements/audit more often than the What if reports?
Tony Bailey
01:47:52
Thank you both so much for taking the time to help us navigate through these changes.

01:47:53

ale11
01:47:59
https://gened.psu.edu/sites/default/files/docs/GenEd%20Requirements.pdf - this is what you're looking for, RUNGUN NATHAN
hbm5103
01:48:46
If you are in the major, you should not pull 'what if' report. Students in major should only work with academic requirements. They are not the same.
Dennis Shea
01:49:13
Again, the policies in the bulletin do NOT match what is being described. In particular the firewall states that the firewall applies to students "whose academic majors are in the areas of natural sciences, arts, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences may not meet the General Education Knowledge Domains components by taking courses in the department or program identical to that of the academic major." That's not what is being done in the audit.
Courtney Wozetek
01:49:47
It does. So 6 cr of GQ must attain a C or higher, regardless of whether they are degree reqs.

This was helpful session, but still I am not clear for many things. It is very confusing to understand these new gen-ed requirements. If we, the advisors, are having hard time to digest, how students will understand this. This was good session, but this focus more on degree audits aspects, I think more training sessions are certainly helpful to understand the fundamentals of these requirements. Thanks!
