Transgender Competency in the Classroom & the Courtroom
Presented by Sara Jacobson, Esq., Executive Director of Training for the Public Defender Association of PA and Jasper Katz, Esq., Attorney at Philadelphia Legal Assistance

To be competent, diligent, and to communicate effectively, lawyers must strive to understand all types of people. In this session we will cover the basic aspects of “transcompetency,” that is, transgender competency in the classroom and in the courtroom. We will cover basic terminology relevant to the LGBT community and offer suggested best practices for how to communicate effectively with a client, witness, attorney, court staff, judge, or student who is transgender. We will also offer suggestions for how to prepare a transgender client for the realities of the courtroom and how to prepare a judge, court staff, or opposing counsel to ethically and professionally treat a transgender client, lawyer, or witness.

This program is co-sponsored by the Dickinson Law Diversity, Inclusion, and Educational Equity Committee, the Office of Academic & Student Services, and the Office of Development & Alumni Affairs in recognition of Trans Awareness Month. It has been approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board for 1.0 hour of ethics distance learning credit.
